Assessment, Evaluation and Grading in Education

Dear students,

this week we'll discuss the three concepts in education: assessment, evaluation and grading. These terms may be related but are not the same thing, e.g. grading is a form of assessment but assessing questions related to student learning cannot be answered only with student grades. On the other hand, assessment and evaluation are often used interchangeable but they can differ in how and when the review is implemented, the focus of the review, and what is done with the findings of the review.

In education, the term assessment refers to the wide variety of methods or tools that educators use to evaluate, measure, and document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs of students. Thus, assessment is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand, and can do with their knowledge as a result of their educational experiences. Assessment can focus on the individual learner, the learning community (class, workshop, or other organized group of learners), a course, an academic program, the institution, or the educational system as a whole.

Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps students learn. When students are able to see how they are doing in a class, they are able to determine whether or not they understand course material.  The primary purpose of assessment is to gather relevant information about student performance or progress, or to determine student interests in order to make judgments about their learning process and to improve students' learning and teachers' teaching as both respond to the information it provides. There are four common types of assessment in schools today—placement, formative, summative and diagnostic. Placement assessment is used to place students according to prior achievement or personal characteristics, e.g.  the tests that colleges and universities use to assess college readiness and place students into their initial classes. Placement evaluation, also referred to as pre-assessment or initial assessment, is conducted prior to instruction or intervention to establish a baseline from which individual student growth can be measured. On the other hand, diagnostic assessment measures a student's current knowledge and skills for the purpose of identifying a suitable program of learning. Formative and summative assessment  occur at different points in the learning process: formative occurs both before and during the learning process, and summative occurs at the end of key segments in a learning cycle or the end of the learning process. Formative assessment is measurement for the purpose of improving it whereas summative assessment is what we normally call “evaluation”.

Evaluation is the process of observing and measuring a thing for the purpose of judging it and of determining its “value,” either by comparison to similar things, or to a standard. Evaluation is a systematic determination of a subject's merit, worth and significance, using criteria governed by a set of standards. In education, "evaluation is the collection of, analysis and interpretation of information about any aspect of a programme of education or training as part of a recognised process of judging its effectiveness, its efficiency and any other outcomes it may have" (Patton, 1987). The primary purpose of evaluation, in addition to gaining insight into prior or existing initiatives, is to enable reflection and assist in the identification of future change.

In general, evaluation processes go through four distinct phases: planning, implementation, completion, and reporting. Evaluations may be formative and summative. Formative evaluations are conducted during program development and implementation and are useful if you want direction on how to best achieve your goals or improve your program. Summative evaluations should be completed once your programs are well established and will tell you to what extent the program is achieving its goals. Evaluation plays an enormous role in the teaching-learning process. It helps teachers and learners to improve teaching and learning as it is a continuous process and a periodic exercise. Evaluation is inevitable in the teaching-learning process, as in all fields of activity of education where judgements need to be made.

Grading in education is the process of applying standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course. Grades can be assigned as letters (for example, A through F), as a range (for example, 1 to 6), as a percentage, or as a number out of a possible total (for example, out of 20) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grading_in_education). Grades can have multiple roles, e.g. as an evaluation of student work; as means of communicating to students, parents, graduate schools, and future employers about a student's performance in school and potential for further success; as a source of motivation to students for continued learning and improvement; as a means of organizing a lesson, a course, or a semester in that grades mark transitions in a course and bring closure to it; etc. Grading often represents a challenge, because grades are used as evaluations of student work and it is very important that grades reflect the quality of student work and that student work is graded fairly. In terms of what grades do and represent, it's no surprise that they are a source of anxiety for students and the grading process is often too stressful for teachers as well.

Furthermore, it is important to make a distinction between assessment and grading. Generally, the goal of grading is to evaluate individual student's learning and performance whereas the goal of assessment is to improve student learning. Although grades are sometimes treated as a proxy for student learning, they are not always a reliable measure, especially as they may also incorporate criteria such as attendance, participation, and effort, that are not direct measures of learning. On the other hand, assessment goes beyond grading by systematically examining student learning and using this information to improve educational practices.

When we assign a grade to a student, we have to know exactly what we are evaluating. Most often, a grade represents a combined assessment of each student’s learning achievement (testing what the student knows or knows how to do), general performance (the quality of work that the student produces for the course), and effort (how hard the student worked in the course). It is important for teachers to provide clear grading guidelines and enforce them fairly in order to reduce the level of anxiety about grading. It is also worth to mention that there are many studies that have examined the relationship between grades in school and success in life.  The only correlation found was between grades and academic success, because scores may predict success for those who aspire to academic studies, whereas grades have actually nothing to do with success in life in general.

  1. Hello everyone 👋🏻 I think this topic is important for primary school but it is also very important for kindergartens .
The assessment and evaluation of children’s learning is intended to inform and
improve student learning and to ensure effective programming. A thorough
understanding of student learning requires three components: assessment, evaluation
and reporting. Assessment is the gathering, recording and analysis of data about the student’s progress and achievements.Evaluation is the making of judgements and decisions
based on the interpretation of accumulated data. Teachers develop and implement a range of instructional strategies that address
student needs, abilities and learning styles and are based on these expectations and
directives. Teachers also continually assess students’ achievements and progress
using a variety of appropriate strategies. This assessment information is collected and
analyzed to determine student needs, set goals and develop plans to improve student
learning. Teachers communicate clear and detailed information to parents/guardians
about their child’s achievement, areas for growth and suggestions for supporting their
child’s learning at home. The Kindergarten progress report and the Junior
Kindergarten Conference form are two methods used by teachers to report on student
    learning.

  2. Hi💁‍♀️
Since the beginning of public education, teachers have recognized the need to have a formalized way to evaluate the progress of their students. After all, how can teachers even know if their teaching methods are effective if there is no way to measure the success or failure of their students? Letter or number grades have traditionally been used to assess student progress, but there are other, perhaps more effective ways to evaluate.
Grading – Grading is a way for educators to evaluate each individual student’s performance and learning. Grading can include letter grades, percentages and even a simple pass/fail.
Assessment – Using assessment as a ruler to measure student learning often includes analyzing grades. This, perhaps, is why some people confuse the two terms. Grades should be a “major source of data” when evaluating student progress; however, assessment goes beyond grades.

  3. Hello :)
When we talk about assessment, it's actually systematic process of documenting and using empirical data to measure knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs. By taking the assessment, teachers try to improve the student's path towards learning.
On the other side, evaluation focuses on grades and might reflect classroom components other than course content and mastery level. An evaluation can be used as a final review to gauge the quality of instruction.
Grading is a way for educators to evaluate each individual student’s performance and learning. Grading can include letter grades, percentages and even a simple pass/fail. Grades can be attached to physical activities like writing assignments, lab work, projects, reports and tests.
The question arises "Which one is better: grades or assessment?"
Well, while grading may seem as old fashioned, and assessment progressive, there is clearly room for both of these methods in the modern educational system. Grading is best for evaluating large amounts of student data — as when the individual states need to assess their educational systems — while assessment gives teachers a valuable tool for measuring the individual progress of students in their classes.

According to many teachers and students, grading system is a good initiative and providing valuable advantages such as: Reduced score pressure: The grading system has reduced the scoring pressure of students....Teachers grade children's skills of writing, reading and listening. Worse, points-based grading undermines learning and creativity, rewards cheating, damages students' peer relationships and trust in their teachers, encourages students to avoid challenging work, and teaches students to value grades over knowledge.

  5. Hello everyone!
    The assessment pays attention to learning, teaching, as well as the outcomes, but evaluation focuses only on the final outcome. Assessment and Evaluation are not the same, there is some diversity among them. Assessment is ongoing, improves learning quality, is individualized, ungraded, provides feedback and it is process-oriented while Evaluation provides closure, judges learning level, it is applied against the standard and graded, shows shortfalls and it is product-oriented. A grading system in education is a system that is used to assess the educational performance of a child which is entirely based upon points alone. There are 7 types of grading systems available in our society;

    • Percentage grading – From 0 to 100 percent
    • Letter grading and variations – From A grade to F grade
    • Norm-referenced grading – Comparing students to each other usually letter grades
    • Mastery grading – Grading students as »masters« or »passers« when their attainment reaches a prespecified level
    • Pass/Fail – Using the common scale as Pass/Fail
    • Standards grading – Comparing student performance to a pre-established standard (level) of performance
    • Narrative grading – Writing comments about students

In my opinion, grades are not good for students because student becomes more focused on what will get him/higher grades than to focus on learning a particular topic. The problem nowadays is that our School System values grades more than Students value learning.
    Stay happy and healthy :)

  6. Hello,
One of the most important parts of the educational process is certainly assessment, which determines the level of achievement of the observed person in mastering knowledge, skills and competencies during its monitoring and evaluation.
Throughout the process of interpretation, monitoring and systematic examination, it seeks to gather many different elements and information about the observed persons so that an objective approach and realistic assessment can achieve the evaluation of student progress and achievement. The primary school principle of assessment, where the mastery of basic concepts and their understanding is assessed, is not at the same level of assessment and assessment in contrast to secondary school and higher education. Assessment is the last stage in the pedagogical process of monitoring and checking and is closely related to the knowledge about the student collected in these stages. The application of the method of examination and assessment, adapted to a certain systematic level of progress of the student or the observed person, must not be uncomfortable and stressful for students, in order to avoid the appearance of discomfort and fear and in the aftermath of resistance.

  7. Hello people!
School is a sacrosanct place and is touted to be the second home of children.
Teacher is a person who holds a valid teaching certificate and is responsible for instruction, assessment, and evaluation of student learning, and for communication of assessment and evaluation results to students, their parents/guardians, and others with a legitimate need to know.
Teachers need assessment and evaluation results to assist them to plan, implement, and revise their classroom instruction. They also use these results to better meet the needs, often diverse, of their students, identify scholarship recipients, and advise students on what courses to take for career planning.
When we talk about education, the term assessment refers to various methods or tools that teachers use to assess, measure learning progress, acquire skills or educational needs of students. There are different types of assessment in education. All assessment methods have different purposes during and after instruction. When we talking about types of assessment, we should introduce:
    Pre-assessment or diagnostic assessment
    Formative assessment
    Summative assessment
    Confirmative assessment
    Norm-referenced assessment
    Criterion-referenced assessment
    Ipsative assessment

Assessment can be conducted at the class, course, program, and institutional level. Each assessment plan should begin with learning outcomes. Learning outcomes are developed at each level but should also relate to one another.

Grading is classified and the learning success of each student is achieved individually.
Despite the many advantages and disadvantages of grading, it is still present in most education systems around the world.
If we start today with the proper application of these methods in teaching, within a few years we can see a healthy and well-educated student community, and after that there will be only competition in soft skills and knowledge intensity and nothing more.
    Best regards!

As for other issues, I met successful people who were not excellent students, so I think the grade was not a sufficient success in later life.

Evaluation focuses on grades and might reflect classroom components other than course content and mastery level. An evaluation can be used as a final review to gauge the quality of instruction. It’s product-oriented.
Besides the differences, there are also some similarities between assessment and evaluation. The both require criteria, use measures and are evidence-driven.
Grading is a way for educators to evaluate each individual student’s performance and learning. Grading can include letter grades, percentages and even a simple pass/fail. Grades can be attached to physical activities like writing assignments, lab work, projects, reports and tests. They can also be assigned to more nebulous activities that a teacher feels are important to the learning experience. These can include participation, attendance, classroom behavior and even effort.
Grading is the traditional method of measuring whether or not students are participating successfully in their classroom experience and whether or not they are learning. It has the advantage of being codified. Letter or number grades are easy to add up and record, and a teacher can quickly get a sense of a student’s success or failure by scanning that student’s grades.
Assessment, on the other hand, has many advantages of its own. Assessment can look past the blurring data of grade averages and identify areas of weakness in a course of study or in an individual student’s education. It can also be highly individualized because the educator who designed the course and its materials plays a big role in choosing assessment goals. Because that teacher knows what information and skills he or she intended to impart, that teacher is often the best judge of whether those learning goals have been met. Students are also judged on their final understanding of the material, not just their accumulative grade point average.

  13. Assessment is a key part of today’s educational system. Assessment serves as an individual evaluation system, and as a way to compare performance across a spectrum and across populations. However, with so many different kinds of assessments for so many different organizations available (and often required) these days, it can sometimes be hard to keep the real purpose of assessing in view. So, what’s really at the heart of all these assessments?
The purpose of assessment is to gather relevant information about student performance or progress, or to determine student interests to make judgments about their learning process. After receiving this information, teachers can reflect on each student’s level of achievement, as well as on specific inclinations of the group, to customize their teaching plans.

Assessment is the process of collecting information about a student to aid in making an evaluation about the progress and development of a student.
Evaluation involves making judgments about the quality, value, or worth of a response, product, or performance based on established criteria.
Grading - the act of classifying something on a scale by quality, rank, size, or progression, etc.
It is very important to know the core and these terms because they are part of everyday use in our job.
    Best regards!

  16. Hello everyone!
Grading and assessment have historically served different functions when reviewing student performance.

Course grades provide individualized evaluation of student achievement and often include criteria beyond measuring the mastery of specific knowledge, skills, and beliefs.

Assessment, on the other hand, examines aggregated trends of student learning across courses, programs, and general education to guide improvement in teaching pedagogies and methods.

While seemingly disparate endeavors, grading and assessment can be linked as long as the learning activities directly align with larger course or program outcomes. Well there is something that I don't like...grades. For me they are not important. Evaluation we need that everything become better.... but I don't I agree with grades....

  17. Assessment is the systematic process of documenting and using empirical data to measure knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs. By taking the assessment, teachers try to improve the student's path towards learning. Evaluation focuses on grades and might reflect classroom components other than course content and mastery level. An evaluation can be used as a final review to gauge the quality of instruction.Grading is a way for educators to evaluate each individual student’s performance and learning.
I think the purpose of assessment is to motivate students to learn more. In addition, student knowledge is given a certain quality and value.
A grading system in education is a system that is used to assess the educational performance of a child which is entirely based upon points alone.

  18. Hello everyone!
Assessment is any activity that judges a student's success. The pedagogical outcomes that the school sets as its goal are how to help students acquire knowledge. Assessment therefore refers to the techniques by which we can track a student’s progress toward specific educational outcomes. The first question we face in assessing student progress is what the purpose of assessment is. Assessment can have different purposes, and the most common purposes are:
Ø Provide teachers with feedback on student progress
    Ø Motivate students
Ø Provide a record of progress
Ø Evidence of the effectiveness of teachers and schools.
Student assessment is certainly one of the most difficult moral tasks of any teacher. Practice shows that teachers mostly adhere to the established pattern of student assessment. A student who gets a good impression from a teacher at the beginning of the year will remain so until the end of the school year. It is very rare or not at all that a student who is below average even though he learns a certain teaching material does not get a higher grade than the one the teacher is used to giving him.
Numerous studies on assessment methods in primary and secondary schools have proven the importance of correct and appropriate methods of assessing student work, keeping records and reporting on student progress. The way in which student work is assessed, recorded, and presented has a major impact on later student motivation and its strategies that the student will use in later learning. The skills that teachers have in this area are also important.

  19. What's the definition of assessment in education? Assessment is the systematic process of documenting and using empirical data to measure knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs. By taking the assessment, teachers try to improve the student's path towards learning. This is a short definition of assessment.
And what's the definition of evaluation in education? Evaluation focuses on grades and might reflect classroom components other than course content and mastery level. An evaluation can be used as a final review to gauge the quality of instruction. It’s product-oriented. This means that the main question is: “What’s been learned?” In short, evaluation is judgmental.
So, after reviewing characteristics of both, it would be clear that assessment and evaluation are completely different. In my opinion, while evaluation involves making judgments, assessment is concerned with correcting the deficiencies in one’s performance. Although, they play a crucial role in analysing and refining the performance of a person, product, project or process.

  20. Teacher in evaluating student work and results:
    - devises value principles (criteria) and ways (strategy)
    evaluation,
    - involve all students in assessment if possible,
    - explains to students the value principles (criteria) of assessment.

Students should always know what is expected of them.

Evaluating student activities and success should serve
training for self-assessment and self-evaluation works
developing awareness of one's own knowledge and acquired competencies and
about the importance of continuous learning.

Evaluation involves giving feedback, feedback on each student activity, assessment is the ability to observe student achievement guided by numerical or some other order, while assessment is the final judgment of evaluation and assessment. Evaluation, assessment and evaluation are interrelated concepts and without each other they would not be able to function. In order to be able to evaluate a student, we need to monitor his work and commitment for some time, only then will we be able to give honest feedback.

  21. Hi everyone! How are you?!
This topic is very interesting for us, future teachers. Evaluation, assessment and grading may be related but they are not the same thing. The goal of grading is to measure student's learning and mark it with some simbol (number, letter, percentage etc.), and assessment is about improving student's learning, his ways of learning and his learning strategies. I think that teacher must be very careful when he evaluates/assesses/grades his students because one wrong grade can make student loses his learning motivation. In former education sistem it was easier for teachers to grade their students, bur nowdays everything is student-centered and there are parents, school and all other elements to which teacher must pay attention to.

  22. Assessment, evaluation and gradeing students in the classroom is an integral part of teaching, it is an important, very responsible and very sensitive task performed by the teacher.

Assessment students involves recording observations about the development of students' interests, motivation and abilities, his achievements in the adoption of the content of the subject or educational area, his attitude towards work and tasks and educational values.

Knowledge testing is understood as the systematic monitoring, examination and evaluation of students' achievements and success in accomplishing the tasks of a subject or educational area during the school year.

Gradeing is the process of evaluating all relevant facts about a student's achievements during monitoring, checking, and testing, and is expressed through assessment.

If I had the power to influence, I would absolutely advocate the abolition of grades, as they are today. Assessment and evaluation must be represented, but grades, like mere numbers, do not.

  23. Grades have been the primary form of communicating and reflecting student mastery. Teachers feel compelled to grade any and all student work, believing that a letter or percentage will indicate to students and parents a measure of skill. Teachers feel boxed in and forced to report grades, students are trapped "earning" them. When the goal of education is the grade at the end of an assignment…than, hmm we failed.

  24. Grading is a form of assessment but assessing question related to student learning cannot be ansvered only with student grades. Assessment and evaluating are often used interchangeable but they can differ in how and when the review is implemented. The primary purpose of assessment is to gather relevant information about students performance or progress. The primary purpose of evaluation, in addition to gaining insight into prior of existing initiatives, is to enable reflection and assist in the identification of future change. The goal of grading is to evaluate individual student's learning and performance whereas the goal of assessment is to improve student learning.
Grading is the proces of aplying standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course.
In terms of what grades do and represent it is not surprise that they are source of anxiety for students and the grading proces is often too stressful for teachers as well.
There are 4 common types of assessment in schools today: Placement, Formative, Summative and Diagnostic.
They can make stress and anxiety with students because grades are very important for them and it shows how much they work on education. Teachers must know exactly how can they evaluate and what is important for them to give a mark.
I can't imagine an education system without assessment/evaluation/grading because it is very perfect system that have all important information about student's work and progress.

Very interesting topic, one of my favorites!
I always look back at the questions you leave at the end of the blog, so this time i noticed one very interesting question "Is grading a challenge for a teachers? Why?" . I think that greading is very challenging for teachers, especially for those of us who work with children in the classroom, but I think it is also a challenge for students. We as teachers we have to be consistent , we have to be fair, apply well, have our own criteria, and children in that period are still to young to understand that. So then we find ourselves in a position where we need to evaluate a child and sometimes give a bad grade, and at the same time assess how will grade affect the child. Also, in many cases, with the grade in some way we open or close some life paths to the child and direct them, so the greading should be a thorough and detailed. It is somehow easier for teachers in older classes, because at least he doesn't have to think about how the child would feel when he gets his grade.
I would have a lot of reasons why i think that grading is a challenge for the teachers, but not to prolong the comments ...

  26. Hello 🧡
I think that assesment, evaluation and grading are one of the most difficult tasks in the teaching proffesion.

I researched and here are some definitions:
-Grading summarizes many outcomes for one student.Grades represent a sum of an individual student’s progress (outcomes) and overall performance. Grades often include other elements of course expectations beyond the learning goals and objectives, such as attendance. Grades tell us a student has learned something, but they don’t tell us what.
-Evaluation is the process of making judgments based on criteria and evidence.
-Assessment is the process of documenting knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs, usually in measurable terms. The goal of assessment is to make improvements, as opposed to simply being judged. In an educational context, assessment is the process of describing, collecting, recording, scoring, and interpreting information about learning.
I think that performance assessments affect learning as well as teaching. Students are more motivated to learn and are more engaged with tasks.

Why is it important to talk about this topic? I think that the success of our work depends on knowing these terms and working on them.
When it comes to education, assessment means the same as the general meaning of the word, but we have to remember another fact. That fact is that assessment in education is done in order to improve the process. The assessment pays attention to learning, teaching, as well as the outcomes. Therefore, I think that everything depends on assessment.
In the field of education, evaluation means measuring or observing the process to judge it or to determine it for its value by comparing it to others or some kind of a standard.
A grading system in education characterizes or positions the children based upon points.

Evaluation is the process of observing and measuring a thing for the purpose of judging it and of determining its “value,” either by comparison to similar things, or to a standard.
Evaluation is a systematic determination of a subject's merit, worth and significance, using criteria governed by a set of standards.
Grading is a way for educators to evaluate each individual student’s performance and learning. Grading can include letter grades, percentages and even a simple pass/fail.
Using assessment as a ruler to measure student learning often includes analyzing grades. This, perhaps, is why some people confuse the two terms. Grades should be a “major source of data” when evaluating student progress; however, assessment goes beyond grades.

  29. Hi everyone! This is an inexhaustible topic. On the one hand, grading must exist. Students must receive feedback. But, it is important to point out that the assessment must be motivating. Often the grade serves as a punishment for teachers. That can affect children very badly psychologically.
A few years ago I read the book “Summerhill”. Children in Summerhill had complete freedom in their school and they were not evaluated. I believe that children in the developmental period cannot have so much freedom. They are not ready to decide what is good and what is bad for them. In Summerhill they could choose what to study and what not, and for this they were never graded. They could do what they wanted. I believe that all children must have some general knowledge and therefore grades must exist.

  30. Hello everyone!
Assesment, evaluation and grading in education..
All of these assesment evaluation and grading are important for measuring students progress and when having all of these for students we will be able to have more details, more informations about studenta progress, which is much better description of students individual progress, achievements than when we use just one of these three.
Individually any of these three isn't enough to make objective grading, or to get know what level is particular student knowledge - progress like.
Assessment is progressive, it measures students progress and achievements. It helps teacher to recognize student needs, abilities and to make individual educational plan and program for every student individually. It will also help to make focus, to make grades of those what is most important for individual students progress.
Evaluation helps teachers to evaluate methods and styles of learning, to make improvements in their own work, so students have better progress.
Grading is old way, but most popular method, it is good feedback for students, teachers and parents.
Combined with other two is perfect way to evaluate student progress.

  31. Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps students learn. When students are able to see how they are doing in a class, they are able to determine whether or not they understand course material. Assessment can also help motivate students. I also found some of the researches on the internet connected to this topic.

    Researches shows that :

    * Effective teachers use data and other evidence to constantly assess how well students are progressing in response to their lessons (Timperley & Parr, 2009).
    * Effective principals constantly plan, coordinate and evaluate teaching and the use of the curriculum with systematic use of assessment data (Robinson, Lloyd & Rowe, 2008).
    * Effective education systems engage all school staff and students in school self-evaluations so that program and policy settings can be adjusted to maximise educational outcomes (OECD, 2013).

In my opinion, all of these three concepts are very important in education and it’s unimaginable to have an education system without some of these.

  32. Hello :)
In every walk of life the process of evaluation takes place in one or the other form. If the evaluation process is eliminated from human life then perhaps the aim of life may be lost. It is only through evaluation that one can discriminate between good and bad. The whole cycle of social development revolves around the evaluation process.

In education how much a child has succeeded in his aims, can only be determined through evaluation. Thus there is a close relationship between evaluation and aims.

Education is considered as an investment in human beings in terms of development of human resources, skills, motivation, knowledge and the like. Evaluation helps to build an educational programme, assess its achievements and improve upon its effectiveness.

  33. Man spends about 15 years in average in the process of formal education (including colleague). In that period of life, he gets many grades. Some of them are positive and some might be negative. However, in the end, his work has been evaluated so many times.
Assessment, evaluation and grading are integral parts of school system. In the process of formal education every single student is being assessed, evaluated and got many grades. Teacher plays a great role in that process. Assessment is one of the most important things in the process of education. It considers systematic process of tracking and documenting of student’s progress, his acquired skills and knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. Teacher uses a variety of methods and tools to be able to do that. By taking the assessment, teachers try to improve the student's path towards learning. In addition, to be able to say if that student’s progress is increasing or decreasing, teacher has to do an evaluation. He has to evaluate student’s work in a certain period of time. Evaluation provides data to make a judgement or decision. Based on evaluation, teacher can make a review of progress of students and their achievements. That’s why evaluation has to be put in some kind of standard measurements - grades. Grades can be good indicator of student’s progress and work, but it does not have to be the case. The problem appears when the students focus is on grades and not on knowledge. Grades should be just an indicator of student’s current progress and not his/her goal. Having good grades affects positive on students and they get more motivation to achieve better results. However, on the other side, bad grades should not be the mark for “bad student”. It should be examined why poor results occur. Grading can be very challenging for the teacher and teacher should have grading system based on some kind of criteria. Of course, not all students can be graded in the same way.
Grading system has to exist, but it has to be used wisely.

As already mentioned the terms "Grading", "Assessment" and "Evaluation" in education do not mean the same thing. As a teacher it is very important to know this difference. By assessing the child's abilities, we will be able to plan the contents that are appropriate for them. This is very important, especially when we talk about preschool education- the basis of education. Grading can have positive and negative impacts for the student. A negative impact means that the child focused only on the grades, but not on the content of what was learned and not on knowledge. On the other hand, a positive impact means that the grade motivates the child for the learning content. Whether positive or negative influence will prevail depends on the teacher and his methods of work. It is important to note that grades isn't a measure of knowledge.

  36. One of the daily activities in school is grading. In general, assessment is a reflection of students' abilities, motivation and knowledge. It affects the status of students in the peer group, the teacher’s preferences and parental satisfaction. Monitoring students involves the systematic recording of observations about the development of students' interests, motivations and abilities, their attitude towards work and set tasks, etc. The school system as we know it today could not actually function without a grade. Students attend classes for the purpose of acquiring new knowledge and abilities, and it is evaluated at the end of a certain period of time. Modern didactics seeks to expand the concept of assessment for the benefit of students, and at the same time exposes the assessment process. Recently, the assessors themselves are being assessed, as well as teachers (but other staff also). The grade should no longer be just a number without explanation, and the student is no longer a passive observer.

  37. A grading system in the field of education is a system that helps in assessing the level of educational performance of the child which is based entirely upon the points only. Grading system is considered an integral part in the education system to assess the overall performance of the students. Grades matter when it comes to meeting future education goals. For most students, the two biggest factors when it comes to grades are potential for scholarship awards and potential for college acceptance. Once students make it to college, they might think it's okay to relax when it comes to grades. That can be dangerous! College grades matter when it comes to staying in college, receiving and keeping financial aid, and getting into a graduate school, if that is a goal. College grades can also matter when it comes to getting a good job. Evaluators should be knowledgeable about instruction and well trained in the evaluation system, including the process of how to give productive feedback and how to support ongoing learning for teachers. The evaluation system should value and encourage teacher collaboration, both in the standards and criteria that are used to assess teachers' work and in the way results are used to shape professional learning opportunities.

  38. This is a very important topic and presents challenge in teaching. In education, the term assessment refers to the wide choice of methods that educators use to evaluate, measure, and document the learning progress, skill acquisition, or educational needs of students.
Assessment is an integral part of instruction, as it determines whether or not the goals of education are being met. Assessment is the measurement of learning acquired.
For education in its purest sense, assessment is the means to determine if a learner has mastered the lesson/skill being taught and is thus ready to move on to the next lesson/skill.
When we assess student learning, we are assessing the success of the teaching. A teacher should always have clear objectives for a unit of teaching. Assessments should measure the attainment of those objectives. Education is considered as an investment in human beings in terms of development of skills, motivation, knowledge and the like.
Evaluation helps to build an educational programme and assess its achievements. Evaluation plays an enormous role in the teaching-learning process. It helps teachers and learners to improve teaching and learning. Evaluation is concerned with assessing the effectiveness of teaching, teaching strategies, methods and techniques. It provides feedback to the teachers about their teaching and the learners about their learning.A grading system in education is a system that is used to assess the educational performance of a child which is entirely based upon points alone.
The grading system creates competition, stress. This is because when students are graded, students tend to compare among their friends. Weak students get depressed and On the other hand, stronger students are at constant pressure to prove themselves just to impress those around them. Students are also a victim by parents whom often forget that all children have the different capabilities, they push their children off the limits thus causes children to be stressed out just to meet their parent’s requirements. When students are stress, their self esteem is low. When this happens, it does not encourage the student to work hard but causes them to give up instead! In addition, the grading system does not encourage students to study for the pursuit of knowledge.
Should grades be abolished? I am going to say both yes and no, I would like to keep grades because of their motivation to improve. But no, because today grades are based on memorizing and forgetting information. Grades today are heavily centered around tests, but test's results reflect only current knowledge. It would be good to introduce a new system of grading to judge a person on their ability to understand instead of to memorize.

  39. Hi. I hope you're all doing fine.

I think people usually confuse assessment and grading to be the same thing. Although these terms are connected closely, they are still very different from each other.
Grading is a method of evaluating a student’s performance. It is done in the form of percentages, marks, letter grades, and more. Grades are usually given on activities like projects, assignments, tests, and more. Where grading means allotting grades, assessment is all about evaluating those grades. To assess a student’s performance, the teacher needs some data. That data comes in the form of grades.
Assessment and grading are both beneficial in their respective fields. Teachers cannot function without either of them. There is an opportunity for both of these to exist. Grades are useful for organizations to measure student’s performance.
Assessment is useful for teachers to give them an insight into the student’s progress. That is to say, both things have equal importance. They can be used appropriately whenever the need arises.
There is also evoluation which includes all types and examinations in it. Its purpose is not only to check the knowledge of the learner, but all the aspects of the learner.

I think that is very important to know differences between these 3 terms :D

  42. Hello!
I think it is very important that we as a future teachers know the defference between assessment, evaluation and grading in education.
The term assessment refers to the wide variety of methods or tools that educator use to evaluate, measure and document the academic readiness, learning progress, skill acquistion or educational needs of students. Assessment is the process of gathering and discussing information from multiple and diverse sources in order to develop a deep understanding of what students know, understand and can do with their knowledge. There are four common types of assessment in school today: placement, formative, summative and diagnostic.

Evaluation is a systematic determination of a subject's merit, worth and significance, using criteria governed by a set of standards.
The primary purpose of evaluation, in addition to gaining insight into prior or existing initiatives, is to enable reflection and assist in the identification of future change.
Evaluation process go through four distinct phases: planning, implementation, completion and reporting.

Grading in education is the processof applaying standardized measurements of varying levels of achievement in a course. Grades can be assinged as letters.
Grades can have multiple roles as an evaluation of student work - communicating to students, parents and future employers about studnet's performance in school and potential for further success.
In my opinion grading have some disadvantages, for example - child focused only on grades but not on content of learning. It is true that teachers must have some way of grading, but I also think that it is up to teacher to offer children interesting content that follows their interests, motivate them and develop children learning habits.

  43. Hello everyone! Professor Izela, thank you so much for this topic. Trough these teksts I learn and think a lot. Students, thank you a lot for these comments! In my opinion these terms; assesment, evaluation and grading may be related but are not the same thing. For example, grading is form of assisment but assesing question related to student learning and teaching cannot be answered solely with student grades. Assesment and evaluation often are used interchangeable but they can differ in how and when the review, and what is done with the findings of the review. Assesment, evaluation and research may share methodologies but their purpose and audiences differ.
In essence, grading in an exercise in proffesional judgment on the part of teachers. In involves the collection and evaluation of evidence on student's achievement of performance over a specified period of timw, such as nine weeks, an academic semestar or school year. Trough this process, varios types of performance are converted into grades or marks that summarize students accomplishment. Unfortunately, from my experience with school-age children, grades mean more than knowledge. Even parents and proffesors give more attention to grades than to evaluation, knowledge and assesment.
Thank you if you reading my review and feel free to comment.

  44. Generally, the goal of grading is to evaluate individual students’ learning and performance. Although grades are sometimes treated as a proxy for student learning, they are not always a reliable measure. Moreover, they may incorporate criteria – such as attendance, participation, and effort – that are not direct measures of learning.
The goal of assessment is to improve student learning. Although grading can play a role in assessment, assessment also involves many ungraded measures of student learning (such as concept maps and CATS). Moreover, assessment goes beyond grading by systematically examining patterns of student learning across courses and programs and using this information to improve educational practices.
Always remember to use them the most effective manner for fruitful results. In short, grading is beneficial in assessing large data whereas assessment works for assessing individual data.

  45. The goal of grading is to evaluate and measure students knowledge. The purpose of evaluation is to gain insight into prior or existing initiatives, and to to enable reflection and assist in the identification of future change. Purpose of assessment is to gather relevant information about student performance or progress, and to improve students learning and teachers teaching. There are four types of assessment in schools: placement, formative, summative and diagnostic. Yes, assessment/evaluation/grading is a challenge for a teachers, because they have to be objective.

  46. Since the beginning of public education, teachers have recognized the need to have a formalized way to evaluate the progress of their students. After all, how can teachers even know if their teaching methods are effective if there is no way to measure the success or failure of their students? Letter or number grades have traditionally been used to assess student progress, but there are other, perhaps more effective ways to evaluated. Grading is a way for educators to evaluate each individual student’s performance and learning. Grading can include letter grades, percentages and even a simple pass/fail. I think that using assessment as a ruler to measure student learning often includes analyzing grades. This, perhaps, is why some people confuse the two terms. Grades should be a “major source of data” when evaluating student progress; however, assessment goes beyond grades.

  47. Hello! :)

I think it is very important that we as a future teachers know the defference between assessment, evaluation and grading in education.Evaluation helps to build an educational programme and assess its achievements. Evaluation plays an enormous role in the teaching-learning process. It helps teachers and learners to improve teaching and learning.
Assessment can be conducted at the class, course, program, and institutional level. Each assessment plan should begin with learning outcomes. Learning outcomes are developed at each level but should also relate to one another. Learning outcomes may be very specific within a class session or lesson-students will explain one specific concept or theory, to broader course outcomes - students will identify key theories in the field, broader academic program outcomes - students will apply disciplinary content to solve problems, and even broader institutional outcomes- students will demonstrate critical thinking skills.

  48. Grades have become the end goal.
Grades, ideally intended as an effective means to learn, have transformed into a goal in itself. Grades force students to memorize those details necessary to pass a test, often disregarding true comprehension of the subject matter.Grades can have multiple roles as an evaluation of student work - communicating to students, parents and future employers about studnet's performance in school and potential for further success.
